Upon recieving the Sceptre he passed it on to his son, but is counted as having ruled one year. It remained the custom until Tar-Atanamir that the king should yield the sceptre before his death. The kings died of free will while yet in the vigor of mind.{UT 213-214}. Note 2: He was also called Parmaite, for with his own hand he made many books and legends of the lore gathered by his grandfather. Numenoreans first come back to Middle-Earth.{UT 214} Note 3: His 'right name' was Irimon; he took his title Meneldur from his love of star-lore. He retired the Sceptre earlier than usual, because of Gil-Galad's worries about the rising of an Evil power in the East, and he thought his son would be better suited to handle the coming crisis.{UT 192-196}. Note 4: She was the daughter of Veantur, Captain of Ships.{UT 165} Note 5: His birth name was Anardil. He became known as Aldarin because of his planting of great forests to furnish timber for the shipyards. He was a friend and counclor to Gil-Galad. He altered the succession law so that his daughter could take the Sceptre. His marrage to Erendis was stormy and not a very happy one.{UT 165-198, 214-215} Note 6: Her mother was Nuneth and her father was Bregar of the House of Beor. She was descended from Bereth, who was the sister of Baragund and Belegund.{UT 169,208} Note 7: Son of Hatholdir, descendent of the House of Hador.{UT 165} Note 8: She was declared King's Heir at the age of 19. The traditional age was 100. After Tar-Aldarion's death she neglected all of his policies and sent no more aid to Gil-Galad. Her marrage to Hallacar was also an unhappy one.{UT 169, 201, 204, 205} Note 9: His sisters refused the Sceptre.{UT 215} Note 10: She would not wed.{UT 215} Note 11: He took this name because he built a high tower on the hill of Oromet, near Andunie and the west shore. He sent a great fleet to the aid of Gil-Galad in the first wars with Sauron.{UT 216} Note 12: He was a greedy man and built a great royal fleet. His servants oppressed the men of Middle-Earth. It is said that he forced his father to give up the Sceptre before he wanted to.{UT 216} Note 13: He was a proud and greedy man like his father. He exacted a heavy tribute from the men on the coasts of Middle-Earth. In his heart he turned against the Valar and Eldar. He was also called 'The Unwilling' because he was the first King to refuse to lay down his life or to renounce the Sceptre. He lived until death took him by force in sinility.{UT 216} Note 14: The rift between The King's Men and those who still maintained friendship with the Eldar grew wider. Many of The King's Men stopped using the Elven-tongue and no longer taught it to their children.{UT 216,217} Note 15: This king was so named because of his love of silver and he commanded his servants to seek for mithril.{UT 217} Note 16: She gave little heed to ruling, loving rather music and dance. The real power was wielded by her younger husband. On her death Herucalmo took the Sceptre withholding it from his son.{UT 217} Note 17: The King's name was first spoken in Adunic under his rule. He took this name, because in his youth he was a great Captain and won many lands along the coasts of Middle-Earth. Thus he kindled the hatred of Sauron.{UT 217} Note 18: First King to take the Sceptre with an Andunic name. The elven-tongues were no longer used or permitted to be taught.{UT 218} Note 19: {UT 219, SIL 267} Note 20: He was the greatest of the enemies of the Faithful that had yet risen. He forbade the use of Eldarin tongues and would not permit any of the Eldar to come to the land and he punished those who welcomed them. He revered nothing and never went to the Hallow of Eru.{UT 218} Note 21: He repented the acts of the King's before him and wished to be friends with the Eldar and The Lords of the West. He took his name because he was far-sighted both in eyes and in mind and even his enemies feared his words as those of a true-seer. He visited the Hallow of Eru at the proper times. He prophesied that when the White Tree died the line of the Kings also would perish.{UT 218,219} Note 22: He usurped the thrown from Miriel and married her against the law of Numenor. He was said to be the mightiest of the Kings of Numenor. He captured Sauron and brought him to Numenor as a hostage. He soon started to listen to the lies of Sauron and brought about the destruction of Numenor.{UT 219, SIL 268-278} Note 23: He set sail for Valinor to beg the Valar for mercy and he was never seen again.{SIL 274} Note 24: He fled to Middle-Earth at the destruction of Numenor with nine ships. Four of the ships were for his Household, three for Isildur, and two for Anarion. Elendil's ships were blown north in the storms of Numenor's destruction where he founded the kingdom of Arnor. She hated the sounds and smells of the sea, all making, all colors and elaborate adornment, wearing only black and silver and living in bare chambers. She had nine black cats and one white, her slaves, with whom she conversed, or read their memories, setting them to discover all the dark secrets of Gondor, so that she knew those things 'that men wish most to keep hidden', setting the white cat to spy upon the black, and tormenting them. Her name was erased from the Book of the Kings, and that King Tarannon had her set on a ship alone with her cats and set adrift on the sea before a north wind. The ship was last seen flying past Umbar under a sickle moon, with a cat at the masthead and another as a figure-head on the prow.{UT 407} Note 30: He regained the Haven of Pelargir and built a great navy. He laid seige to Umbar and took it in 933 SA. In 936 he and many ships were lost in a great storm off of Umbar.{LOTR III 403} Note 31: He continued the building of ships. The men of the Harad, led by the lords that were driven out of Umbar, came up with a great force and attacked Umbar and Ciryandil fell in battle in Haradwaith.{LOTR III 403} Note 32: He bided his time and gathered a strong army and he came down from the north by sea and by land, and crossing the River Harrien his armies utterly defeated the Men of the Harad in 1050 SA. Gondor now reaches the height of its power. Hyarmendacil means 'South Victor'.{LOTR III 403-404} Note 33: He loved ease and did nothing to maintain the power he inherited, and his two sons were of like mind.{LOTR III 404} Note 34: Easterling attacks start again.{LOTR III 404} Note 35: In 1240 SA he was made regent by Narmacil I to rid himself of all cares. He was a man of grear vigor. His chief concern was with the Northmen. In 1248 SA he led a great force, and between the Rhovanion and the Inland Sea he defeated a large army of Easterlings an destroyed all their camps and settlements east of the Sea. He then took the name of Romendacil. He built the pillars of the Argonath at the entrance to Nen Hithoel.{LOTR III 404-405} Note 36: In 1250 SA he was sent to the King of Rhovanin, Vidugavia, as an ambassador. In his time the first disaster of Gondor began, the Kin-strife.{LOTR III 405} Note 37: She was the daughter of Vidugavia, King of the Rhovanin.{LOTR III 405} Note 38: He was supported by the Northmen and the Dunadain of northern Gondor. He was deposed in 1437 SA and restored in 1447 SA. The Stone in the Tower of the Stone in Osgiliath was lost in the waters of Anduin when he was besieged there. In a battle in Lebennin, at the crossings of Erui, Eldacar slew Castamir in battle. Castamir's followers fled to Umbar. Gondor and Umbar were at war for many live times.{LOTR III 405-406} Note 39: He was supported by men of the coasts and the great havens of Pelargir and Umbar. Castamir was said to have been a cruel, haughty, and ungenerous man.{LOTR III 406} Note 40: He was slain at Pelargir in a battle with the Corsairs of Umbar who were led by Angamaite and Sangahyundo, the great-grandsons of Castamir.{LOTR III 407} Note 41: The second disaster of Gondor was the plague that came with dark winds out of the East. Telemnar and his children died in the plague. For weariness and fewness of men because of the plague the watch on Mordor ceased.{LOTR III 407, 408} Note 42: In 1810 TA he gathered his forces and took Umbar by storm. In that war the last descendents of Castamir perished and Umbar was Gondors again.{LOTR III 408} Note 43: The third disaster of Gondor was the invasion of the Wainriders. Narmacil II was killed in battle with the Wainriders beyond Anduin. Gondor's frontiers for a time were witdrawn to the Anduin and Emyn Muil. The Ring-Wraiths re-enter Mordor.{LOTR III 408-409} Note 44: In 1899 TA he had a great victory versus the Wainriders upon Dagorlad.{LOTR III 409} Note 45: He and his sons were killed in battle with the Wainriders north of Morannon.{LOTR III 409} Note 45A: He was King Ondoher's sister-son. He was in command of the rearguard defense. But the Wainriders poured relentlessly into Ithilien and late on the thirteenth day of Cermie they overwhelmed Minohtar, who was slain by an arrow. He was given the crown in 1945 TA. He sent aid to King Arvedui but it arrived to late.{LOTR III 409} Note 47: He was like his father in valour, but not in wisdom. He would take no wife, for his only pleasure was in fighting. He at last accepted the Witch-King's challenge to single combat and he went to Minas Morgul with a small escort of knights and was never seen again. It is believed that he died under torture. He was the last king of Gondor until the return of Aragorn II in The War of the Ring.{LOTR III 413} Note 48: His three oldest sons were slain at the disaaster at Gladden Fields. Isildur is slain and loses the One Ring in the Anduin.{UT 269-275} Note 49: After his reign the kings no longer take names in High-Elven form.{LOTR III 394} Note 50: Because of dessension among Earendur's sons the kingdom was split into three kingdoms. The lines of Isildur soon perished in Cardolan and Rhudaur. Rhudaur and Cardolan fought for the possesion of Amon Sul, because the Tower of Amon Sul held the Cheif Palantir of the North and the other two were in the keeping of Arthedain.{LOTR III 394, 396, 397} Note 51: At this time the kingdom of Angmar first arose.{LOTR III 397} Note 52: Since there were no descendents of Isuldur left in Cardolan and Rhudaur Argeleb I claimed kingship of all of Arnor once more. In token of this the kings took names prefixed with Ar-. This claim was resisted in Rhudaur because power had been claimed by an evil lord of the Hillmen, who was secretly in league with Angmar. Argeleb I fortified the Weather Hills. He was slain in battle with Rhudaur and Angmar.{LOTR III 394,397} Note 53: With help from Cardolan and Lindon he drove back his enemies from the Weather Hills. A great force came out of Angmar in 1409 TA and entered Cardolan and Weather Top was surrounded. Arveleg I was slain in battle and The Tower of Amon Sul was burned and razed but the Palantir was saved and carried to Fornost.{LOTR III 397} Note 54: He was not full grown but with the help of Cirdan he repelled the enemy from Fornost and the North Downs. The power of Angmar was checked for a time by the Elvenfolk out of Lindon, Rivendell and Lorien.{LOTR III 397,398} Note 55: The Pleague came into Eriador and most people of Cardolan perished, especially in Minhiriath. The Dunedain of Cardolan ended and evil spirits came out of Angmar and Rhudaur and entered into the deserted mounds and dwelt there.{LOTR III 398} Note 56: Angmar rose agian and attacked Arthedain in 1974 TA and he captured Fornost. Arvedui took shelter with the Lossoth, the snowmen of Forochel. When Cirdan heard this he sent a ship to look for him. Before Arvedui left he gave the Ring of Barahir to the Chief of the Lossoth as thanks (the Dunadain later paid a ransome to get the ring back). As he sailed away a great storm wind arose and crushed his ship against the ice. The stones of Annuminas and Amon Sul were also lost when Arvedui's ship sank. After Arvedui the North Kingdom ended. When the North Kingdom ended the Dunadain pasted into the shadows and became a secret and wandering people, and thier deeds and labors were seldom sung or recorded.{LOTR 399,400,401} Note 57: He was fostered in Imaldris as were all following sons.{LOTR 401} Note 58: He was slain by wolves.{LOTR III 401} Note 59: In 2509 TA the orcs of the Misty Mountains reveal themselves.{LOTR III 401} Note 60: The orcs of the Misty Mountains begin to ravage the lands and the Dunadain with the help of the sons of Elrond fight them.{LOTR III 402} Note 61: He was slain in the Coldfells north of Rivendell by hill-trolls. {LOTR III 420} Note 62: He was a descendent of Aranarth.{LOTR III 420} Note 63: He went riding with the sons of Elrond against the orcs and was slain when an orc-arrow pierced his eye.{LOTR III 420} Note 64: He lived through many adventures and trials and during the War of the Ring he returned to Gondor and claimed the crown of both Gondor and Arnor.[The Lord of the Rings] Author's Note: There are several descripencies in the above geneology and the Tale of Years in Appendix A in The Lord of the Rings. The differencies are as follows: 1) The date for the aid to Gil-Galad by Tar-Minastir is stated as 1700 SA in the Tale of Years, but in Unfinished Tales Tar-Minastir doesn't start his reign until 1731 SA. Christopher Tolkien could not account for the discrepancy.{UT 221,222} 2) Christopher Tolkien believes that the date for the death of Tar-Atanamir in the Tale of Years is in error.{UT 222} 3) Christopher Tolkien also believes that Tar-Arlamin was accidently left out of the Tale of Years.{UT 222} 4) Tar-Palantir's dates are different, 3175 SA changed to 3177 SA, and Christopher Tolkien didn't know why the dates were changed.{UT 223} David Seuferer davids1690@aol.com
